Joe Broughton seems to have his life sorted, a gifted carpenter with a loving wife and a new-born baby, but there's still something missing. Adopted at birth he becomes fixated on finding his birth parents and follows a trail leading to a revelation that turns his world upside down.

Joe discovers that he's the product of a random coupling between two long-term patients in a psychiatric hospital. Driven by curiosity he decides to meet them and begins a roller coaster ride of self-discovery. Disaster strikes when Joe bravely decides to introduce his parents to his family and friends at a party; alcohol and prejudice prove a dangerous combination.

Despite the set-backs Joe comes to realise he has more in common with his birth-father than he could have ever imagined - for the first time the jigsaw puzzle of his life is complete.
