NEW STREET LAW

John HannahJohn Hannah, John Thomson and Lisa Faulkner head the cast in New Street Law, a gripping, contemporary legal drama starting on BBC One on Thursday 4th May at 8pm.

New Street Law follows the exploits and cases of two rival barristers chambers in the heart of Manchester. The lead writer and co-producer is former criminal barrister Matthew Hall and joint partner in One Eyed Dog Productions with GF Newman.

John Hannah stars as Jack Roper, a young barrister from a working class background who turned down a lucrative job offer from his mentor, Laurence Scammel QC (Paul Freeman), Head of Manchester's leading prosecution chambers in favour of his own defence-only chambers.

Jack founded his own firm with old friend Al Ware (Chris Gascoyne); lovable chancer Charlie Darling (John Thomson); no-nonsense Annie Quick (Lara Cazalet) and cocky Joe Stevens (Lee Williams). Jack's confidence grows with every case he wins and he rapidly threatens Laurence's firmly established position in the legal community - something that Laurence's ruthlessly ambitious wife, Honor (Penny Downie), is determined to prevent. Lurking in the wings is Laurence's daughter, Laura (Lisa Faulkner), who works for the family chambers. She shares Jack's instinctive passion for justice, but she also poses a threat.

Les DennisNew Street Law is a populist programme, but has at its heart an ambition to give genuine and thought-provoking insight into the workings of the British legal system.
